Today It's Those Crosby Men Again!!

by JessicaSmith @ Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005 - 17:10:49

Today it was too cold to go to Ironbridge so I went with Mum & Dad to Crosby beach again...wowee I really love them check out the pics I took today! Had a lovely but very cold walk ...also have a giggle at the santa outfits haha and then a meal in the Italian Kitchen Formby...which Auntie Dorothy paid for...how lucky we are...I had camenbert wedges with cranberry, farfalle salmon garlic bread...never a dull mo

Another Place as I've blogged about before is by Anthony Gormley the Angel of the North man and consists of 100 cast-iron, life-size figures spread out along three kilometres of the foreshore, stretching almost one kilometre out to sea. Don't forget you can only see them at Crosby until November 2006 after which they are going to New York. Each visit you experience the work in a different way depending on the state of the tide, the weather conditions and the time of day you visit. At particularly high tides all the figures are submerged.

According to Antony Gormley, Another Place harnesses the ebb and flow of the tide to explore man's relationship with nature. He explained:
"The seaside is a good place to do this. Here time is tested by tide, architecture by the elements and the prevalence of sky seems to question the earth's substance. In this work human life is tested against planetary time. This sculpture exposes to light and time the nakedness of a particular and peculiar body. It is no hero, no ideal, just the industrially reproduced body of a middle-aged man trying to remain standing and trying to breathe, facing a horizon busy with ships moving materials and manufactured things around the planet."

Do you like the dreads on the crosby statue! haha

Seems such a shame that they're leaving in November.

Apparently, Sefton Council council could have them for good for £1.5m.

Aren't there any millionaires out there...

There are two Gormley figures at Glyndebourne - in a completely different and enclosed setting.

I dearly want to see Another Place before it goes but I'm a long way south. The figures at Glyndebourne are intriguing - I caught the Gormley bug after seeing an exhibition at the Tate St Ives, which is almost as much west from me as Liverpool is north!
